I attended a training! Now what?

We hope that the training you attended has inspired and challenged you to continue your anti-racist education and to become further involved in advancing racial equity. Below are three ways you are able to do so through the Alamance Racial Equity Alliance. We welcome and encourage you to participate in either or both of these groups, and to sign up for the newsletter.

Monthly A.R.E.A. Caucus

On the second Tuesday of every month from 5:30-7:30 PM, we gather together to caucus.

To advance racial equity, there is work for white people and people of color to do separately and together. Caucuses provide spaces for people to work within their own racial/ethnic groups. For white people, a caucus provides time and space to work explicitly and intentionally on understanding white culture and white privilege and to increase one’s critical analysis around these concepts. A white caucus also puts the onus on white people to teach each other about these ideas, rather than placing a burden on people of color to teach them. For people of color, a caucus is a place to work with peers to address the impact of racism, to interrupt experiences of internalized racism, and to create a space for healing and working for individual and collective liberation.

The People of Color Caucus and White Caucus meet separately for the first hour and together for the second.  In these meetings, we explore together how we have been impacted by living in a white dominant society and attempt to heal from those impacts. We also seek ways to work together to bring about change.

Monthly A.R.E.A. Planning Meeting

On the fourth Thursday of every month from 5:30-7:00 PM, a group of primarily AREA volunteers gathers to plan what is needed for AREA in the short and long term. There are various committees that welcome volunteers to assist in the work including finance, logistics (hosting a workshop), outreach to community members, and communications.

If you are interested in participating in either of these groups, please email alamanceracialequity@gmail.com for more information.

A.R.E.A. Newsletter

Area puts out a monthly email newsletter with information on upcoming REI workshops, other racial equity workshops, ways to further your education through books and other media, other local anti-racist organizations and events. If you have signed up for a workshop through AREA you should already be on our mailing list. If you are not receiving the newsletter and would like to be put on our mailing list, please email us at alamanceracialequity@gmail.com.
